PTSD Treatment

Healing from Trauma with Compassion and Evidence-Based Care

Experiencing trauma can leave lasting emotional and physical effects. For some, the memories of trauma don’t fade easily — they continue to cause distress, fear, guilt, or numbness long after the danger has passed. At Power of the Mind Psychology, we understand that these reactions are not signs of weakness, but natural responses to overwhelming experiences.

Our PTSD treatment approach focuses on helping you safely process and heal from trauma using proven, research-based therapies such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE). These approaches help individuals move beyond survival mode and reconnect with a sense of safety, empowerment, and peace.

Understanding PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event such as an accident, assault, combat, abuse, or sudden loss. Symptoms can include:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares

  • Avoidance of reminders of the trauma

  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or self-blame

  • Irritability, anger, or emotional numbness

  • Trouble concentrating or sleeping

  • A constant sense of danger or being “on edge”

At Power of the Mind Psychology, we help you understand how trauma impacts the brain and body, and provide tools to reduce distress and restore a sense of safety and control.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Changing the Way Trauma Lives in the Mind

Cognitive Processing Therapy is one of the most effective, evidence-based treatments for PTSD. CPT helps individuals identify and shift unhelpful beliefs that develop after trauma—such as guilt, shame, or mistrust—and replace them with more balanced and empowering perspectives.

During CPT, you’ll work collaboratively with your therapist to:

  • Understand how trauma affects thoughts and emotions

  • Identify “stuck points” that keep you feeling trapped in distress

  • Learn skills to challenge and reframe unhelpful beliefs

  • Build self-compassion and a stronger sense of control

Through this process, many clients experience relief from emotional pain, greater clarity, and renewed confidence in themselves and others.

Research highlights:
Cognitive Processing Therapy has been shown to significantly reduce PTSD symptoms in numerous clinical trials, including studies published by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and APA Division 56 (Trauma Psychology). CPT is endorsed as a first-line treatment for PTSD by the National Center for PTSD and World Health Organization (WHO).

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)

Gently Facing Trauma to Find Freedom

Prolonged Exposure Therapy helps individuals gradually and safely confront trauma-related memories, emotions, and situations that have been avoided. Avoidance may provide short-term relief, but it can unintentionally reinforce fear and distress over time. PE helps you break this cycle and regain a sense of safety and mastery.

With the support of your therapist, PE involves:

  • Imaginal exposure – revisiting and processing trauma memories in a safe, guided way

  • In vivo exposure – gradually approaching avoided situations that are safe but connected to trauma reminders

  • Relaxation and grounding techniques to manage emotions as they arise

Through repeated, supported exposure, the brain learns that these memories and cues are no longer dangerous—reducing anxiety, avoidance, and reactivity.

Research highlights:
Prolonged Exposure Therapy has decades of strong evidence supporting its effectiveness in reducing PTSD symptoms. It was developed by psychologist Dr. Edna Foa and has been recognized as a gold-standard treatment by the American Psychological Association, Department of Defense, and National Institute of Mental Health.

Integrative Healing for Trauma

While CPT and PE are highly effective, each person’s path to recovery is unique. Your treatment plan may also include elements of mindfulness, self-compassion practices, or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support emotional regulation and resilience.

At Power of the Mind Psychology, we believe healing happens through both science and compassion—helping you not only reduce symptoms but also rediscover meaning, connection, and hope.

What to Expect

During your initial sessions, your therapist will take time to understand your history, strengths, and goals. Together, you’ll determine which treatment approach feels right for you and proceed at a pace that feels safe and empowering.

Our goal is to help you build the tools and confidence needed to move forward—not just to survive trauma, but to thrive beyond it.
